Archion is Germany’s leading internet portal for digital access to historical church registers and an indispensable partner for source-based genealogical research.
Since its foundation in March 2015, Archion has provided a unique collection of historical sources that enables researchers to browse through millions of church register pages from home and gain valuable insights into the history of their ancestors.
Archion is operated by Kirchenbuchportal GmbH, which was founded by the Evangelical Church in Germany together with several regional churches. Other shareholders and contractual partners have since joined, including Protestant archives, diocesan archives, association archives and state archives, association and state archives. Archion works closely with these partner archives in order to preserve the significance and scientific value of the archived material.
Currently, more than 180,000 church records with almost 30 million images from 25 archives are available for viewing on Archion. The company adds further archive material around the clock, which is displayed on the homepage on a daily basis. Archion always adheres to the specifications of the respective partner archives and thus guarantees the highest quality and authenticity of the digitised sources.
The extensive collection of historical parish registers can be accessed via a user-friendly interface that makes it easy for researchers to put their genealogical research on a solid, source-based foundation.
Whether baptisms, marriages or deaths – Archion offers a comprehensive digitised church register archive, including old manuscripts and ink blots, of course.
