Partnership, Open Access and maschine-aided Indexing

“Bring your history day”

Since with the reformation in 2007/2009 the person records in the Federal Republic of Germany have been declared to be archive material, archives open up increasingly to genealogical research which in turn has started to change for its part. It´s obvious: The interest in historic family roots keeps increasing noticeably in the German speaking areas. Parallel to this development, the digital services keep expanding gradually, making the search for ancestors much easier. Now though, the public archives have to face increasing expectations and requirements and have to figure out for themselves if they recognize these new developments as burden or rather as chance and future-oriented perspective.

Since 2010/2011, the Hessian State Archives Marburg has been pursuing a new direction organizationally and technically. Now, the archive kindly invites within the frameworks of the EU-funded project “co:op” to this workshop in order to discuss current results of the new direction. The work accomplished up to now did not just result in the aspired “output”; it even more importantly has lead to inspiring and innovative developments and visions – discussing these with a competent audience is the goal of this workshop.

CO:OPyright @ Austrian Centre for Digital Humanities
Apr 12 – Apr 13 all-day

Tcapturehe conference is hosted by the Centre for Information Modelling – Austrian Centre for Digital Humanities and the Institute of the Foundations of Law, Section ‘Law and ICT’ at the University of Graz (Austria).

In the age of digital information technology and the constant availability of information through the Internet, it is not only important to have democratic access to knowledge, but also essential to consider the potential that lies in the critical production and expansion of knowledge.

The project co:op – short for community as opportunity: the creative archives’ and users’ network – co-funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union aims to strengthen and promote the co-operation between institutions preserving our common cultural heritage and the general public.

Of particular interest and concern to cultural heritage institutions are issues of copyright on, provision of and access to digitized material. There is a recognizable political drive in the European Union to facilitate public access to cultural heritage – and data in general – hosted at public institutions. However, the lack of  legal harmonization and the often unclear national legislations on the use and provision of resources by public cultural  heritage or scientific institutions has been prohibiting a much broader engagement between the general public and its own cultural heritage.

ICARUS4all field trip @ Budapest City Archives
Jun 12 @ 12:15 – 18:30

The Friends Association ICARUS4all invites its members to a field trip to the

Budapest City Archives

Budapest Főváros Levéltára

Short info about the archive

The new building with the prominent front side made of glass blocks dates from 2004. Until then, the Budapest City Archives were spread over seven locations. New building and digitalisation attract more and more people to do on-site-research or to use the database. The holdings of the second largest archive of Hungary comprise approximately 35 kilometres of shelving and are hosted in a storage facility with an area of almost 18.000 m². The documents which date by the middle of the 19th century are written in Latin or German. Only 12 documents from the Middle Ages could be preserved, cause the majority was destroyed due to the Ottoman occupation. These are mainly letters of privilege from the butcher guild. The oldest dates from 1300, and they are kept in the “Páncél” (engl. tank). Furthermore, the letters of privilege for the two free royal capital cities Buda and Pest from 1703 are particularly interesting.

Further information (EN; also available in German) about the history of the Budapest City Archives > here.

Infos about the field trip

Participants obtain a fascinating insight into the different areas of the archive, will find out more about its characteristics, and, by visiting the workshops (e.g. bookbinding, book press), get an impression of the various procedures. The guided tour will be lead by István Kenyeres, the director of the archive. The following round for questions provides time and space for the participants to ask question about the archive, or for example, the Hungarian archival landscape.

New: This year, ICARUS4all offers its members as a separate programme point the possibility to do some guided on-site research on one’s own, or to ask staff members questions about the use of the archive.

Round trip must to be organised by the participants themselves.

The event language is German (with the possibility to switch to English) and jointly organised by the Budapest City Archives and ICARUS4all within the EU-funded project community as opportunity (co:op).

We kindly ask for your binding registration until 7th June!
