ICARUS4all field trip @ Budapest City Archives
Jun 12 @ 12:15 – 18:30

The Friends Association ICARUS4all invites its members to a field trip to the

Budapest City Archives

Budapest Főváros Levéltára

Short info about the archive

The new building with the prominent front side made of glass blocks dates from 2004. Until then, the Budapest City Archives were spread over seven locations. New building and digitalisation attract more and more people to do on-site-research or to use the database. The holdings of the second largest archive of Hungary comprise approximately 35 kilometres of shelving and are hosted in a storage facility with an area of almost 18.000 m². The documents which date by the middle of the 19th century are written in Latin or German. Only 12 documents from the Middle Ages could be preserved, cause the majority was destroyed due to the Ottoman occupation. These are mainly letters of privilege from the butcher guild. The oldest dates from 1300, and they are kept in the “Páncél” (engl. tank). Furthermore, the letters of privilege for the two free royal capital cities Buda and Pest from 1703 are particularly interesting.

Further information (EN; also available in German) about the history of the Budapest City Archives > here.

Infos about the field trip

Participants obtain a fascinating insight into the different areas of the archive, will find out more about its characteristics, and, by visiting the workshops (e.g. bookbinding, book press), get an impression of the various procedures. The guided tour will be lead by István Kenyeres, the director of the archive. The following round for questions provides time and space for the participants to ask question about the archive, or for example, the Hungarian archival landscape.

New: This year, ICARUS4all offers its members as a separate programme point the possibility to do some guided on-site research on one’s own, or to ask staff members questions about the use of the archive.

Round trip must to be organised by the participants themselves.

The event language is German (with the possibility to switch to English) and jointly organised by the Budapest City Archives and ICARUS4all within the EU-funded project community as opportunity (co:op).

We kindly ask for your binding registration until 7th June!

Late summer fair at Klein-Mariazell @ Basilica Klein-Mariazell
Sep 23 @ 12:00 – 22:00

Basilica Klein-Mariazell

The friends association ICARUS4all invites its members to Klein-Mariazell in the region “Mariazell im Wienerwald” in the surroundings of Vienna!

Benefit from this opportunity and visit the pilgrimage site “Klein-Mariazell”! At the beginning, we offer you a guided tour through the Basilica Klein-Mariazell by Thomas Aigner (president ICARUS). The former Benedictine abbey was founded in the early 12th century and repealed 1782. The magnificent Romanic and baroque treasures are really worth seeing!

This classy ambience provides the framework for the ICARUS4all-general meeting and the review of 15 years Monasterium. For those, who don’t know Monasterium yet: It is the biggest virtual documents archive of Europe and one of three online-platforms (Monasterium, Topothek, Matricula), which have been initiated and are being operated by the International Centre of Archival Research (ICARUS). As a member of the ICARUS4all community, you support its continuation.

In order to experience this beautiful landscape actively, we invite those, who enjoy hiking, to a joint hike to the Hafnerberg (ca. 1,5 hours). There, our ICARUS president guides through the worth-seeing baroque pilgrimage church.

For those of us, who prefer to move motorised, we have an alternative programme: you get a guided tour through the baroque pilgrimage church Dornau-Thenneberg.

Over delicious regional food and drink and while listening to live music, we will enjoy the evening at the “Gasthaus zum Kleinen Semmering”. It is located at the Hafnerberg.

Important info: Arrival and departure have to be organised by oneself, as usual. If enough participants are interested in a shuttlebus, we consider to book one from Vienna central train station to Klein-Mariazell and return. This is one important question, that we ask you to answer via our registration form on time (at latest until 4th September)! The cost sharing fee for the shuttlebus accounts for 10 Euro (there and back) per person (regular bus-ticket ÖBB-Postbus costs 13,20 Euro per direction). We kindly ask you to pay cash in the bus.

The event language is German. For additional information about place and history (DE) click here. Brief history of the three pilgrimage churches.

ICARUS4all-excursion @ Archiv der Erzdiözese Salzburg
Jun 22 @ 10:45 – 16:30

The friends-association ICARUS4all offers its members an excursion to the

Archive of the Archdiocese Salzburg (Austria)

Short info about the archive

The archive of the archdiocese Salzburg is located at the Kardinal-Schwarzberg-Haus since May 2006. It’s an “One-House-Solution”, which means that all functional areas are beneath the same roof: on three floors with a total area of 2.000 square metres you find 9.600 linear metres of archive material in five magazines. They date back to the 12th century. The first systematization took place after the unrest according to the peasants revolt in 1525. The collection of documents nowadays includes 3.600, and the graphics-, plans-, and photo-collection include more than 30.000 exhibits in total.

To the highlights rank the documents from the “Dommusikverein and Mozarteum“, matrices with records from W.A. Mozart or C. Dopper, some “Mozartianas” and records about the forced displacement of the protestants in 1731/1732. The modern archive fulfills several tasks, e.g an art inventory of church-owned art treasure, or the development of a people database about public individuals who had any relations to Salzburg from 1500 until now.

More information (DE) about the Archive of the Archdiocese Salzburg.

The participants receive an exclusive guided-tour through the archive by director Thomas Mitterecker. He gives you a fascinating insight to the different areas and tells you all about the characteristics, working-methods and challenges.

Thereafter, the participants have the possibility to gain more and specific information about the usage of the archive.

After lunch in a cosy restaurant close to the archive, we organised for those who are also interested in local and contemporary history a guided-tour through the special exhibition “Anschluss, Krieg & Trümmer – Salzburg und sein Museum im Nationalsozialismus” at the “Neue Residenz” (Salzburg Museum).

The event-language is GERMAN. It is commonly organised by the archive of the archdiocese Salzburg and ICARUS4all.

Conference: The art of preserving culture @ Wien
Nov 14 @ 14:30 – Nov 15 @ 16:00

The event is at the same time the closing conference (fourth conference) of the international research initiative ‘En route to a shared identity. Sources on the history of Central Europe in the Digital Age’, led by Adelheid Krah (University of Vienna/AT).The international team, whose members are renowned scholars working at universities and archives in the field of research and teaching in Austria as well as in neighbouring countries of Austria, has existed since 2014 and is explicitly addressing the question of conservation and preservation of culture in the Central European and European area.

As it apparently becomes more difficult, despite the digitization and the opening of borders, to preserve the right of people on culture, cultural networking and the traditionally connecting construction of a shared identity, within this final conference also the study of music as another discipline as well as the dimension of the art of the interpretation of a piece will be included. To the existing co-operations of the working team comes a further collaboration with the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna. We are looking forward to this!

At the conference, next to numerous talks on new topics and issues also two pieces will be presented:

  •  the in the Vandenhoeck&Ruprecht publishers as well as in the Böhlau publishing house issued edited volume of the conference in November 2017 ‘Sources, neighbourhood, community. En route to a shared cultural history of Central Europe’, ed. A. Krah (Wien, Köln, Weimar 2019, 302 p.),
  • the new CD ‘postscriptum B. – Beethoven-Katzer-Kontraste’ with cello sonatas by L. v. Beethoven and G. Katzer (interpreters J.-U. Krah, B. Parz) in a concert at the MKU Vienna at the occasion of the coming Beethoven year.

All contributions of the conference will again be released in an edited form on the blog ‘En route to a shared identity’, link: https://dighist.hypotheses.org/ and published until February 2020 online. At this point, the team will lay down its collaborative work until further notice.
