Within the frameworks of the EU-funded project “community as opportunity” (co:op) the complete stock of documents of the Monastery of St. Emmeram in Regensburg (DE) at the Archives of the Bavarian State in Munich (DE) has been digitised: ca. 4500 charters from the year 194 to about 1800 will soon be available online. By taking the example of this corpus of source material, the workshop intends to bring together research questions and technical exploitation models.

2018 European Year of Cultural Heritage
During 2018, the European Year of Cultural Heritage, the national coordinators of the European Year such as civil societies organisations, small local initiatives, big European networks etc. organise a variety of events and activities on this occasion.
The European Year of Cultural Heritage draws attention to the significance of heritage sites, crafts, and intangible stories of our ancestors that are passed from one generation to another. Cultural heritage shapes our identities and has a profound impact on our everyday lives.
To understand that our history used to be someone else’s present and that our present will become someone else’s history is essential for the vision of a meaningful future. We are currently facing pressing questions related to the legacy of cultural heritage, which should be not only preserved and uncritically admired but also made alive.
The Creative Europe Desk of the Czech Republic invites to their international conference “Focal Point: Upcycling Cultural Heritage” to discuss the following key questions:
- Why and for whom do we preserve cultural heritage?
- What can cultural heritage organizations and sites offer to society?
- What is the relationship between cultural heritage and contemporary art?
A variety of internationally renowned experts with different professional backgrounds and disciplines will share their thoughts, experiences and expertise on the given topics, inter alia, Thomas Aigner (President of ICARUS).

The film festival organized within the EU-funded project “co:op – community as opportunity” is the concluding activity of the project and signals the end of a four year long inspiring and exciting cooperation project with our project partners from all over Europe.
The festival will look back and reflect on on two special activity types carried out within the project: the “Adventures in Archives” film happenings and the “Bring Your History Days”.
“Adventures in Archives” invited high school kids, equipped with modern recording devices like digi cams and smartphones, behind the walls of archival institutions to spot the hidden treasures of historical material, learn about the various occupational areas in an archive and eventually discover how our cultural identities have evolved and their witnesses are being safe-guarded for the future.
The close cooperation between archives and education centres encouraged the understanding and perception of archives in the public, educated our younger generations on the manifold possibilities of professional qualifications, be it modern-day archivist, (art) historian, media production, journalism, restauration, international project or cultural management, and rose awareness for the shared heterogeneity of our cultural identities.
At the festival, the movies and clips produced by the students will be screened. Discussion rounds will reflect on the experiences made by the students themselves and also on the experiences made by the archive staff and pedagogues involved.
The “Bring Your History Days” documented the process on setting up Topotheques, an online service tool joining historic material from private collections and thus highlighting the vivid history of municipalities and communities. The documentations give insight into what it takes to build a topotheque and how important historic materials kept in private collections are with regard to enriching and broaden the perspective of the past.
At the film festival a closer look will be taken at the role a Topotheque can play for a community and how the voluntary participation of citizens in setting up a Topotheque raises awareness for the importance the past plays in the present – and for the future.
The Oranizing Committee of the 3rd Archival Conrgess in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Archival Association of Bosnia and Herzegovina are convening the third congress of archival professionals and scholars in a 3-day conference. Next to paper presentations divided in three thematic sessions, the congress will also feature other events. The congress location is the Hotel “San” in the town of Laktaši.
The dates are 5th to 7th June 2019, Wednesday to Friday, several days before the International Archives Day.
The three themes and their concpetual framework are these:
- Archives and education
- Records on and from Bosnia and Herzegovina beyond its borders
- Archives in the post-truth era

International conference on “Archival Studies, Source Studies – Trends and Challenges”
The National Archives of Georgia welcome the submission of proposals for the Fourth International Conference “Archival Studies, Source Studies – Trends and Challenges”.
The goal of the conference: to collect the scientific innovations, to bring together the Georgian and foreign scientists for further broadening of communication, to promote the interdisciplinary and intercultural researches, to seek for the adaptation ways of the modern requests of the Cultural Heritage Management, to share the novelties of the digital humanitarian sphere.

The opening of the Stasi Records was a unique act following the Peaceful Revolution of 1989 turning the archive into a role model for many post-dictatorial societies. With the enactment of the Stasi Records Act on January 2, 1992, citizens for the first time were able to view their files in order to clarify the influence the Stasi had on their fate. The former Stasi headquarters meanwhile was turned into an educational site addressing issues of dictatorship and resistance, as well as a learning space for democracy. This unique location will be host to the fifth edition of the “Open Archives” conference in Berlin on 4th and 5th of November 2019, on the 30th anniversary of the Peaceful Revolution.

The event is at the same time the closing conference (fourth conference) of the international research initiative ‘En route to a shared identity. Sources on the history of Central Europe in the Digital Age’, led by Adelheid Krah (University of Vienna/AT).The international team, whose members are renowned scholars working at universities and archives in the field of research and teaching in Austria as well as in neighbouring countries of Austria, has existed since 2014 and is explicitly addressing the question of conservation and preservation of culture in the Central European and European area.
As it apparently becomes more difficult, despite the digitization and the opening of borders, to preserve the right of people on culture, cultural networking and the traditionally connecting construction of a shared identity, within this final conference also the study of music as another discipline as well as the dimension of the art of the interpretation of a piece will be included. To the existing co-operations of the working team comes a further collaboration with the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna. We are looking forward to this!
At the conference, next to numerous talks on new topics and issues also two pieces will be presented:
- the in the Vandenhoeck&Ruprecht publishers as well as in the Böhlau publishing house issued edited volume of the conference in November 2017 ‘Sources, neighbourhood, community. En route to a shared cultural history of Central Europe’, ed. A. Krah (Wien, Köln, Weimar 2019, 302 p.),
- the new CD ‘postscriptum B. – Beethoven-Katzer-Kontraste’ with cello sonatas by L. v. Beethoven and G. Katzer (interpreters J.-U. Krah, B. Parz) in a concert at the MKU Vienna at the occasion of the coming Beethoven year.
All contributions of the conference will again be released in an edited form on the blog ‘En route to a shared identity’, link: https://dighist.hypotheses.org/ and published until February 2020 online. At this point, the team will lay down its collaborative work until further notice.

6th Croatian ICARUS days
“Archives – borders, identities, reflections”
Rijeka/HR, March 25th to 27th 2020
ICARUS Hrvatska in cooperation with ICARUS, the University of Rijeka (Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences) and other partners, organize the 6th Croatian ICARUS days under the topic “archives – borders, identities, reflections” – intending to emphasize the current importance of archival institutions and records for societies.
The conference will take place in Rijeka, Croatia, on the premises of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, from March 25h to 27th 2020 and we are happy to invite all scholars, students, professionals and archival fans to join us in the promotion of archives in the European Capital of Culture 2020.
At the conference, ICARUS and its members will present various activities concerning networking, digitization and protection of written heritage, as well as current archival projects and programs across Europe, such as CREARCH, Digital Treasures, Store the future and international digital platforms for cultural heritage such as Topotheque, Mapire, Archives Portal Europe and others. The conference program will also focus on up-to-date issues emerging from the archival and heritage preserving community, with emphasis on IT themes, information on, presentation and interpretation of historical sources, use in the digital world and open access to GLAM institutions, like Time Machine activities, DARIAH topics and interdisciplinary projects such as Rijeka in Flux, Frankostrukcija, Znameniti.hr etc.
Participation in the conference is free of costs. The conference languages are Croatian and English.
We kindly invite potential speakers to present a paper (15 min.) corresponding with one of the proposed topics. The International Conference is dedicated to 100 years since the establishment of the National Archives of Georgia and 300 years since the birth of the King Erekle II.
The goal of the conference is to collect the scientific innovations; to bring together Georgian and foreign scientists for further broadening of communication; to promote the interdisciplinary and intercultural researches; to seek for the adaptation ways of the modern requests of the Cultural Heritage Management; to share the novelties of the digital humanitarian sphere.
The National Archives of Georgia calls for proposals until 28 June 2020.
