ICARUS4all Spring Excursion @ Regioarchiv Sittard-Geleen
Jun 1 @ 09:30 – 16:00

Dear ICARUS4all Members!

As you certainly know, our president, Peer Boselie, comes from Sittard in the Dutch province of Limburg, where he is the head of the Sittard-Geleen regional archive until his retirement at the end of May.
On the other hand, with the continuing going online of parish registers of new dioceses in Germany, our association has recently seen many new members joining from these areas.

If we add one and one together, the place and occasion for this year’s

spring excursion
on 1 June 2024 in Sittard (NL)

literally suggests itself!!!

Sittard is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands. “Small but fine,” as Albert Dürer wrote. Inhabited since around 5500 BC, it served as a fortified town since around 1200. In 1677, it was largely destroyed by the French, but many traces of its history still remain. Notable features include the oldest choir stalls in the Netherlands (circa 1400), the (small) Bastion Sanderbout, and the first Basilica Minor in the Netherlands (elevated in 1883). Pope Pius IX himself sent the cornerstone for it.

Especially notable are the secret gardens, where history is told in a different way, through stories of war and peace, poems and songs, about God and people.

9:30-10:00 AM: Welcome at the Regioarchiv Sittard-Geleen, Kapittelstraat 6, Sittard
with coffee/tea/’vlaai’ (European heritage!)

10:00-12:00 PM: Guided tour of the archive, including explanation of the archive system and digital resources.

12:00-2:00 PM: Lunch (individually at one of the many restaurants nearby).

2:00-4:00 PM: City tour with visits to some special buildings and the “secret gardens of Sittard.” Departure point: Regioarchiv Sittard-Geleen, Kapittelstraat 6, Sittard.

How to get there:

By train: You can reach Sittard by train via Aachen and Heerlen. Alternatively, you can take a train to Geilenkirchen and then catch bus SB3 to Sittard (hourly service).

By plane: If you’re flying, you have a couple of options. You can fly into Eindhoven Airport, which is advantageous as there’s a bus connection to the train station. From there, you can take a train to Sittard (approximately 45 minutes). Alternatively, you can fly into Düsseldorf Airport and continue your journey by train via Aachen or Geilenkirchen (as mentioned above).

Participation in the archive and city tour is free, and we would be delighted to welcome you in Sittard on June 1, 2024. Please register by May 20, 2024, via email at with the subject “Sittard 2024” and provide us with:
• Name
• and number of persons

Best regards and see you soon!
