“Metadata for Cultural Heritage Material”

The course deals with the description of data in “metadata”, which is crucial to organize and retrieve digital documents or images used and produced by humanities scholars. It introduces the main standards for the encoding of metadata (Dublin Core, Encoded Archival Description (EAD), TEI-Header, Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS), CIDOC-Content Relationship Model, Europeana Document Metadata, and if wished by the students domain specific standards as Getty Categories for the Description of Works of Art (CWA) etc.) or Model Requirements for the Management of Electronic Documents and Records (MoReq).
Practical examples will cover organizations that are concerned with documentation and information distribution tasks, such as libraries, archives and museums, but also present relevant results from (mainly EU-funded) specialist projects.

University workshop
New times, new use-cases: digital repositories in archives and libraries
This workshop aims at describing how different meta data schemes and OAI-PMH protocols can be integrated into one management system. It will furthermore analyze data from Europeana (EDM) in view of how it can be applied to archives and libraries within the context of LInked Open Data.

Handwritten Text Recognition, or how to revolutionize access to archival collections
The Hessian State Archives in Marburg (DE).
From 19-21 January 2016 the Hessian State Archives in Marbug (DE) organizes the first international convention of the co:op (community as opportunity – the creative archives’ and users’ network) project in cooperation with the project READ (Recognition and Enrichment of Archival Documents). As both projects take highly current topic areas of the international archive-specific discourse into focus concerning archivists, historians and information technologists alike, the convention will bridge current research topics of the humanities with the pioneering technological innovations of handwritten text recognition and thus enhance both spheres resourcefully.
Thus, the aim of this joint co:op convention and kick-off meeting of the READ project is simple: Learn from each other! Computer scientists shall get a sound insight into archival collections and the main research questions, archives shall get a better understanding of cutting edge technological solutions as they will be exploited in the READ project.

The Croatian State Archives organizes together with ICARUS and the State Archives in Dubrovnik the 2nd Croatian ICARUS days under the theme “Archives and community”.
It will also include the 2nd international gathering “Together” of the State Archives from the Slavic countries.

The emphasis of this conference through the perspective of the ICARUS network will lie on the experiences and capabilities of Croatian archives on digitization activities and protection of written heritage as well as current archival projects and programmes across Europe, such as the EU-funded project “co:op – community as opportunity“.
Furthermore, the „Venice Time Machine“ project, the Monasterium portal, Topotheques, the marking of WWI and further topics will be highlighted within the given context.

This exhibition is dedicated to LIPSZKY János (1766-1826) – a hussar officer known for his cartographic accomplishments – celebrating his 250th birth anniversary.
Both, the exhibition and the accompanying flash conference are jointly organized by the National Széchényi Library and the National Archives of Hungary.

As part of the opening ceremony, the experts from the NSzL, the National Archives of Hungary, the Institute and Museum of Military History, the Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Hungary and the Eötvös Loránd University will present their relevant research.

The National Archives of Hungary organizes a round table within the EU-funded project co:op (community as opportunity) between archivists and users aiming at exchanging valuable experiences and improve team work between archival experts and the user commnuity.
The event will be held in Hungarian, registration is kindly reqeusted.
The second Czech topoteque was just recently set up in the Czech village Podolí I which is located in the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic.
Now, the village Podolí I holds a special “Bring your History” day organized within the EU-funded project co:op (community as opportunity) inviting its citizens to and the community to get to know the exciting opprtunities of the service tool “topotheque”.
Milada Jiroušková, the topotequer of Podoli I, will introduce and explain the topotheque to the interested public and invite everyone to join this iniative and help showcase the village’s history by providing archival material from personal collections.
What kind of stories are hidden behind this image? The topotheque might unearth a tale or two.
The power of Open Data in the cultural field
The digitization of cultural heritage safe-guarded in archives, libraries, museums and galeries releases unexpected potential for use. Only by making this data publicly available, can their full potential unfold its full effect. This path into the digital future is full of challanges.
We invite you to actively co-shape the OpenGLAM movement (Galleries, Libraries, Archives & Museums) in Austria. Representatives from various institutions learn from each other, cooperate and gather to discuss current national developments regarding the accessibility of Open Data in order to support art and cultural institutions as well as public interest.

The Seminar “The Archival Military System in the Community of Madrid” aims to raise awareness towards the panorama of military archives that are based in the Community of Madrid.
To that end, it will be introduced with a lecture on the Archival Military System with respect to the Spanish State. Then there will be two round tables; one focused about central and general archives, and the other historical archives.
