Apr 27 – Apr 29 all-day

This international conference will take place within the premises of Břevnov Archabbey and is co-organized by our colleagues from the Národní archiv in Prague.

ICARUS-Meeting #16 @ Bildungshaus St. Hippolyt
Nov 23 – Nov 25 all-day

Bild Hippolyt

(c) Bildungshaus St. Hippolyt

Our second network meeting of 2015 will take place in St. Pölten (AT) at the Bildungshaus St. Hippolyt within the frame work of the project “co:op – community as opportunity. the creative archives’ and users’ network“. The programme of the meeting offers a special event counting on our network’s active input:

Archive material in the Middle East between menace and solidary

Almost every week the public – likewise experts and laypersons – are alarmed by terrifying news coming from the crisis-shaken Middle East region, regarding the repeating barbaric destructions of the oldest cultural heritage of mankind by fanatic and ideologically blinded forces. But not only the archaeological finds are endangered. The archival treasures of the region are facing similar threats and the erasement of millennia-long traditions seems to be possible.

ICARUS recognises its responsibility in this matter and wants to contribute by giving information and offering help, where it is needed mostly. Beside others P. Najeeb Michaeel (Dominican Fathers Church, Paris) and professor Andreas Schmidt-Colinet (Institute of Classical Archaeology at the University of Vienna) will give an overview about the current situation of the archives in Iraq and our colleague István Kenyeres from the City Archives in Budapest will share his practical experiences during a recent helping mission in the Ukraine. One of the main aims of the workshop is to find out the most urgent needs of the colleagues on-site and how to organise the most effective help.

It is furthermore a special honor to have Patriarch Louis Raphaël Sako (Chaldean Catholic Church, Baghdad) and Bishop Shlemon Warduni (Chaldean Catholic Church, Baghdad) with us during the meeting.

International workshop

The current act of wars in Syria and Iraq post a devastating threat to the region’s cultural heritage, thus to the written archival records.

The ICARUS network consisting of more than 170 archival and academic institutions from all over the world shows solidarity with the colleagues that are relentlessly working on safe-guarding this cultural heritage in the current menacing circumstances.

This workshop aims at facilitating exchange between representatives from the ICARUS network and colleagues from Iraq on current developments and possibilities for future projects and cooperation. Engaging the latter into the activities of ICARUS and its members will offer the opportunity to become part of this community and thus profit from and take part in international knowledge and experience exchange as well as specific projects.

Keynote:

  • Najib Michael (Dominican Fathers Church, Paris): The rescue of archives and libraries in Mosul

Co-keynotes:

  • Patriarch Louis Sako (Chaldean-catholic church, Baghdad)
  • Bishop Shlemon Warduni (Chaldean-catholic church, Baghdad)
