Challenges and Opportunities

The Church is experiencing a period of profound transformation: a shortage of priests, the merging and consolidation of parishes, structural reforms, and ongoing digitalisation are shaping ecclesiastical life throughout Europe. These developments have a direct impact on church archives – on their organisation, their responsibilities, and their future perspectives.

The 4th Conference of European Church Archivists therefore invites participants to Vienna for an international exchange aimed at understanding change not only as a challenge, but also as an opportunity. Experts from numerous European countries will discuss current developments, share experiences, and present proven models for sustainable archival practice.

Main Topics

Within the framework of round tables, panel discussions, and best-practice presentations, the following topics will be addressed:

• Challenges and structural changes within the Church
• Sustainability of church archives
• Preservation, research, and communication of archival heritage
• Digitalisation and digital strategies
• Best practices from various European countries

A special highlight will be the opening address by Mons. Angelo Vincenzo Zani, Emeritus Archivist and Librarian of the Holy Roman Church.

International Exchange

Representatives from Austria, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, and other countries will contribute their perspectives and foster a vibrant European dialogue.
