New Vice-President: Prof. Antonella Ambrosio

We are delighted to (re)introduce Prof. Antonella Ambrosio as Vice-President of ICARUS!

Antonella has been part of ICARUS from the very beginning, recognising early on the potential of Monasterium for teaching and education. From 2011 to 2017 she already served as Vice-President alongside Vlatka Lemić and, over the past 17 years, she has been a driving force in spreading ICARUS and Monasterium, especially in Southern Italy. Thanks to her efforts many archives have joined our network; her most recent success is the decision of the Naples State Archives to publish its entire charter collection in Monasterium in autumn 2025. Together with Georg Vogeler and Vera Schwarz-Ricci she co-edited the first digital critical edition realised within Monasterium, and she actively promoted the creation of ICARUS Italia, now directed by Maria Rosaria Falcone.

Antonella is Associate Professor of Palaeography and Diplomatics at the University of Naples Federico II and head of the Laboratorio dei Documenti Storici nel Web (DSWLab). Her main academic lines of work include medieval documentary culture in Southern Italy, notarial and monastic archives, digital diplomatics, virtual archives on platforms such as Monasterium.net and Topotheque, and the integration of digital tools into university teaching and public engagement.

In her new mandate as Vice-President, Antonella will lead ICARUS4Education, the strategic line dedicated to education, training and capacity building across the ICARUS community. As she says: “Education is the way we open archives, tools and knowledge to a wider community. ICARUS4Education should be a shared space where we design learning paths together and where digital skills grow hand in hand with critical historical thinking.”

Alongside this educational focus, she will also coordinate project activities and their links to the ICARUS platforms, working to ensure that new initiatives make effective and sustainable use of Monasterium, Topotheque and related services. In addition, she will support partnership development and networking with other institutions, strengthening the connections between ICARUS, universities, archives and research infrastructures at European and international level.

We are excited to begin this new chapter together!
